A key multidisciplinary and research-oriented university directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Nankai University, founded in 1919, is also the alma mater of the first Premier of P. R. China-Zhou Enlai. It is located in the most active economic port city of northern China: Tianjin.
 
Nankai has 23 Schools and Colleges, 73 Undergraduate programs, 208 Master’s programs, and 122 Doctoral programs. It is a research-oriented university with a wide range of disciplines. Currently, the University has a total enrollment of 22,989 students, including 12,677 undergraduate students, 7,148 master's degree candidates, and 3,230 doctoral candidates.
 
Nankai University is committed to internationalization. Currently, it is affiliated with 268 universities from more than 40 countries. It has established many programs for exchanges with such institutions as Columbia University, Princeton University, Oxford University, Munich University, University of Melbourne, Tokyo University, Waseda University, Seoul University and Korea University. It has also established 7 Confucius Institutes in America, Europe and Asia. In the 1950s Nankai began accepting foreign students. To date, there are nearly ten thousand foreign graduates of Nankai scattered among 160 countries and areas such as the UK, US, Japan and Korea. In 2011, over 2000 international students, visiting scientists and scholars have attended Nankai University. Many of these students have gone on to become professors, diplomats, company executives and government officials after finishing their studies at Nankai.
